Herpa’s package for May and June 2006 contains quite a number of pleasant surprises:
Airplanes
019200 Cessna 172 Skyhawk $46.95 “Cessna” is almost synonymous with single-engine aircraft, although the Kansas-based manufacturer of aircraft offers a variety of machines. They introduced the Skyhawk 172 in 1956 and kept her in production ever since, making her the most popular airplane in history. 160hp are enough to lift it 2,450 lbs into the air and keep it exactly there for five to six hours, at a top speed of around 142mph (123 knots). – Herpa surprised everyone with a sample on display in Nürnberg in February and readied the model for delivery in June. When the Junkers Ju52 in 1/160th scale was introduced some 15 years ago, there were rumors a 1/87th scale plane might follow. It took them until 2006 to deliver, and the carefully selected prototype suggests this will end up very successfully. Herpa even hints at other 1/87th scale aircraft to follow – probably not a 747 jumbo jet, but smaller items just as this Cessna.
Passenger Cars
023504 – 1971 Volvo P 1800 ES, pearl white $9.75 033503 – 1971 Volvo P 1800 ES, metallic red $10.50 “Shooting brake” is what the British would call this type of car. In 1971, the most beautiful Volvo ever complemented the P1800 coupe with its identical front-end styling, but unconventional rear-end. With respect to the greenhouse, it was soon called “Snow White’s coffin” in Germany. 8,077 units were built between 1971 and 1973, as compared with around 40,000 P1800 coupes.
023511 – 1971 BMW 2000 tii touring, orange $9.75 033510 – 1971 BMW 2000 tii Touring, metallic blue $10.50 The proverbial hot hatch – and one of the first - BMW’s wagon-coupes were made from 1971 to 1974, featuring 1.6 to 2.0 liter inline-fours and quite a striking design. Different from the BMW 2002 sedan of a couple of years ago, the Touring promises to be one of Herpa’s best models. It happens to be one of the very few BMW models which have not yet been done in 1/87th scale. Incidentally, Herpa promised at Toy fair these three “youngtimers” (including the Fiat X1-9 to follow in August) would be the start of a whole new series of quality automotive classics.

740319 World War II Wehrmacht Panzermörser Armored Rocket Launcher 38cm – Sturmtiger. Based on a converted Tiger tank, the Sturmtiger was a truly interesting weapon. Also known as the Sturmpanzer VI or Sturmmörser, the heavily armored Sturmtiger was designed to eliminate house-to-house combat by simply flattening structures and bunkers. It fired rocket-propelled 800-pound naval depth charges and its 150mm frontal armor was nearly impenetrable to enemy fire. The holes surrounding the muzzle are vents for the rocket exhaust gases. $18.95
